My Philosophy of Therapy
Bob

I view our work together as a shared journey with my clients. My role is to encourage change and help them to reexamine their thoughts and feelings, to gain insight into the underlying purpose behind their behavior and their goals for living, and ultimately to effect positive life changes.

I believe that therapy is more effective when there is a goal-oriented focus. I like to establish agreement with clients on the goals of therapy early in our relationship. It is important that these are my client’s goals, not mine, and that they are based on realistic expectations of what we can accomplish together. My approach is to honor the uniqueness and individuality of each person.

I believe that people have the ability to change and reach their life potential, but they are hindered by past life experiences that have resulted in distorted beliefs about themselves and others. By helping my clients to gain insight into what caused these false beliefs, by exploring with them their past experiences and negative life patterns, I believe that it is possible for them to live more fully, obtain greater self knowledge and ultimately gain control over their behavior so that their thoughts and actions are self-enhancing rather than self-defeating.

I work with adults, adolescents, couples, and families. Areas of specialization include couples counseling and grief therapy.

I am trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy, which helps couples resolve conflicts, better understand each other's needs, and gain more compassion for each other.

I am Certified as a Thanatologist (grief and bereavement counselor) by the Association for Death Education and Counseling. I work with clients to guide them through the stages of grief by giving expression to intense feelings, adjusting to life without the loved one, and ultimately finding meaning and new direction in life.
